Family and friends of Marcus Landin found a way to keep his memory alive and raise money to help fight the heart condition that took his life.

Saturday they held a memorial benefit in Four Seasons Park in Kalida, which was complete with a 5K race, raffle, and chicken barbecue. The proceeds from the event went for research for a cure for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.  On Christmas Day 2017, 19-year-old Marcus passed away suddenly from the heart condition which causes cardiac arrest and is common in young people. So organizers thought the benefit is a way they could help others and remember Marcus at the same time.

Lauryn Selhorst, Marcus's cousin says, “We wanted to keep Marcus alive, by having this memorial benefit to also raise money for funds and research what he passed away from, the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.”

Sarah Cleemput adds “Parents should never have to wake up to that and it just keeps him alive and help find resources to help this.  Because it’s something that happens suddenly and you don’t know when to expect it.”

The organizers are looking at making the Memorial Benefit a recurring event to raise money for research for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
