The Ohio Department of Transportation is about three months into a $4 million dollar project on the northern stretch of West St. and for the most part, it has been pretty smooth paving.

Right now, crews are mainly working between Northern and Jacobs Aves., paving new sidewalks along with a new curb and gutter.

They will also be resurfacing sections of the road between SR 115 to Jacobs Ave. and from Northern to Grand Aves. ODOT Public Information Officer Rhonda Pees says that the construction is necessary due to an increase in traffic in the area over the years.

"This corridor has built up over time and the access points here haven't really kept up with that," says Pees. "As traffic changes, the infrastructure needs to change."

The sea of orange barrels may be a little daunting as you drive along, but Pees says they are making every effort to stay in communication with businesses to make sure customers will still have easy access and in the end, the changes should make for a much easier and safer shopping experience.

"In the end, what's going to happen is you're going to have a much more modern looking corridor, better access points in and out of businesses, and more clearly defined driveways so people will know exactly where they need to go, and safer access to access those businesses along this corridor," says Pees.

ODOT currently has traffic running in the southbound lanes but plans to flip it to the northbound lanes sometime in July.

Pees says that the project is essentially on schedule and that it is still expected to wrap up in early November.
