Training for new entrepreneurs was a big topic of discussion at Monday night's Lima City Council meeting.

Jermaine Harper, of Urban Impact Ohio, spoke on "Startup Lab" a model to put people back to work, decrease those on welfare, increase the number of minorities hired at companies and provide training for those looking to start businesses. A question on the minds of council members was what is the quantifiable measure of success with the program, which Harper said has done very well in Cincinnati and other cities. Harper is asking for $60,000 for this program, which would come from CDBG grants.

"They plan to give entrepreneurial training to individuals of low to moderate income means, to help them develop ideas into business concerns," said Lima City Council President John Nixon. "It can be anywhere from home business to brick and mortar business."

This will be discussed again at the next Council meeting on July 2nd. Also, Ray Magnus took the privilege of the floor and proposed an "Entertainment District" where people can take their alcoholic beverage from one downtown bar to another. Councilman Jamie Dixon made a motion for his proposal to be referred to the Neighborhoods Concerns Committee.
