Thyroid cancer is among the most treatable cancers out there, but people are being diagnosed with it now more than ever.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association says the rate of thyroid cancer tripled between 1975 and 2013, partially due to doctors catching it earlier on through screenings, as well as them having access to better tools. Lima Memorial Health System surgical oncologist Dr. Phillip Gafford says that while thyroid issues normally appear in the late teens to early twenties, it is important for people of all ages to know the signs of a thyroid issue.

"Typically they may have an intolerance to either heat or cold," says Gafford. "They may be gaining or losing weight unexpectedly, they may also be losing their hair or their hair may be changing. Usually, there are subtle differences that something is off, usually, you'll feel sort of an enlarged thyroid in physical examination. Usually, those are the signs."

The study says researches found that rising obesity rates in the United States may be a factor as well as a decrease in smoking, however, smoking is not recommended as a means to ward off thyroid cancer.
