The village of Forest wrapped up their annual Tree Town Festival by bringing church to the people.

A large crowd turned out to Gormley Park for the 13th annual Church in the Park. While everyone is welcomed to the nondenominational service the real purpose is to reach those without a home church.

"There's a group of us that go this together, we decided that after our annual festival we wanted to have a church service on Sunday and we're actually trying to reach the un-churched," says LeeAnn Loveridge, a member of the Church in the Park Committee.

Giving the sermon was former baseball star turned minister Darryl Strawberry. Strawberry, who gives talks on how he overcame addiction through finding God, says he wanted to share with Forest the importance that religion and a church community can have in a person's life, especially at a time when there is so much going on in our country.

"America's broken and people are wounded, and they have to understand Jesus was wounded for our transgressions," says Strawberry. "He's already healed us. There can be a healing process if we come back and follow his principles. Families are breaking apart and kids are dying and it doesn't have to be like this."

And his message hit home for those who relate to this struggles and his journey.

"Being a recovering addict myself, I just came upon six months myself, I think his message was inspirational and the biggest part I liked was when he was talking about finding God," says attendee Gill Madison. "I hard a hard time with that for a long time."

Treva Webb agrees, saying "I got a lot of encouragement out of it. I know God, but I'm still searching and I do know that I can't go on this journey without God."

"[Strawberry's] also been through some stuff and he came through," says Madison. "I know I can do it. He did it, I can do it, too."
