An effort by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources was held to promote safety on the water.

"Operation Dry Water" was underway over the weekend before July 4th. It's a nationwide initiative aimed at getting boaters under the influence out of public waterways. According to ODNR, the department and other partnering agencies contacted 35 hundred boaters for violations of Ohio watercraft and laws.

The officers issued eight boating under the influence violations, 102 citations, and nearly 900 boating safety warnings while on the lookout for behavior from boaters like sailing too close to another boat or littering into the water. Those with ODNR say that it's a big risk to go out and boat while under the influence.

"It can be just as dangerous as operating a motor vehicle on the roadway while under the influence; it can be just as dangerous doing that out on the water as well, so [Operation Dry Water] is a big drive just to make the public aware of the issue, and also just for the state to get a statistic how often alcohol in boating occurs," said Sgt. Kim Sheets with ODNR.

There were also three boating-related deaths in Ohio during the 2018 Operation Dry Water weekend.
