In a prime-time announcement Monday night, President Trump just revealed his nominee to fill a pivotal seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.

Brett Kavanaugh, who serves on the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia circuit, could replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy if confirmed. Following a brief period in private law practice, he became President George W. Bush's White House Counsel and then Staff Secretary before he was nominated to be a Federal Judge. Kavanaugh was nominated to the Appeals Court by President Bush and confirmed in 2006 by a vote of 57-36. Should he be confirmed, Kavanaugh makes the Supreme Court solidly conservative, joining Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch providing a five-vote majority.

"If confirmed by the Senate, I will keep an open mind in every case and I will always strive to preserve the Constitution of the United States and of the American rule of law," said President Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

This was the President's second nomination, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said, they will hold a confirmation vote, this fall.
