During the summer months, the importance of sun protection is a hot topic.

With so many different brands on the market, it's hard to know which product is best for you and your family. And even the best one won't work if it's not applied properly. To help answer some of your most critical questions when shopping for sunscreen, we spoke with Mercy Health nurse practitioner, Jenelle Niese.

"So there's three things you want to keep in mind, one is the SPF or sun protection factor, we want to look for that, making sure it's usually 30 or above. We want to make sure its broad spectrum, meaning it covering against both UVA and UVB rays. And three, we want to make sure it's water resistant which means it should also be sweat resistant and this is consistent with what the American Academy of Dermatology recommends as well," explained Jenelle Niese, Mercy Health Nurse Practitioner.

Niese says it is important to wear sunscreen every day and reapply it every two hours when out in the sun. As for babies, it's best to keep them completely out of the sun, if you can.
