A new program allowed kids to get a closer look at frogs and toads Thursday afternoon at the Oakwoods Nature Preserve.

Those with the park district say that having youngsters around this age learning more about the outdoors and nature is important.

"They’re getting to the age where there’s other things for them to learn about, other things that might grab their attention - whether it's school, or video games, or things like that, so keeping that interest and love for nature is always good," said Michelle Rumschlag, a naturalist with the Hancock Park District.

Another "Discovery Explorers" program will be held in August, with the theme of "skeletons".
