There was a lot of fun to be had at the New Life Assembly Church on Kibby Street as members of the community joined in with officers from the Lima Police Department's Community Oriented Police Program for a cookout. The church is one of the locations for the C.O.P. Program, with their office located in the back of the building.

People had the chance to grab a hot dog, talk with the officers, and even dunk one of the police department's finest in the dunk tank. This is just one event that officers hold to show people that they aren't just a uniform - they're a member of the community too.

"A lot of times we get a stigma that goes along with some of the world today, but we’re a little bit more than what meets the eye, there are guys behind the badge," said Officer Justin Wireman.

The officers say that it's great to see people come out, especially the younger kids: "We’ve got a couple of our guys that we know and we deal with them on a regular basis, they dunk us in the dunk tank, it’s their way of kind of getting back at us for one time," said Wireman. "To see the smile on the kids' faces as they laugh and go around and around and around again on the dunk tank and then eat hotdogs - it’s all about having fun, coming together as a community, and doing some great things."

The Northside of Lima will also have their chance for some cookout fun on Saturday, August 11, at Robb Park from 5 to 9 pm.
