A gas line was struck on West Street by construction crews Monday afternoon, leading to several people being evacuated from their homes and businesses.

Around 11:45 Monday morning, a utility line near the corner of West Street and Northern Avenue was hit, causing the fire department to shut down the area. The Lima Fire Department said that they evacuated three homes on the west side of the street, plus the Enterprise Rent-a-Car and the Fuel Stop gas station nearby. Those with Dominion say that luckily, the leak will not affect customers.

"It’s a two-way feed, so we didn’t lose any customers, it’s just a matter of shutting it down and repairing the line and going on about our merry way," said Peggy Ehora, External Affairs Manager of Dominion Energy. "Safety first and nobody was hurt - the inconvenience of the customers comes kind of second to that - but at the end of the day, nobody was hurt in this incident, and that’s always the most important thing for us."

Just before 2 p.m. Monday, the leak was fixed and everyone was able to return home. Dominion wants to remind people to call 8-1-1 before they dig. To find out more about the call-before-you-dig process and what to do once the markers are placed, you can visit www.ohio811.org.
