If you were around the water tank construction site in Simmons Field Tuesday afternoon, you may have heard the explosive next step going on for the project.

Tuesday was the first big controlled blasting for the 13 million gallon underground water tank project, one or two blasts will be done per day for the next several weeks. Utilities Director Mike Caprella says that the crews have removed around 15 feet of dirt and are now working on removing about 25 feet of rock, and they are doing so in a timely manner.

"The project is going well, they're on time, so everything is good," Caprella said. "Once they remove all the rock, then they start pouring the tank, and it's all poured concrete. This is a three-year project; it's not just one year or six months, so they'll be here for a long time."

Caprella says that other aspects of the project like the pump station and odor control structure will also be added later on.
