Senator Rob Portman and two other U.S. Senators have introduced legislation to outline how tariffs will be used for national security.

The Trade Security Act, which was introduced on August 1st, reforms Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to focus the statute as a way for the president and Congress to respond to threats to national security. The legislation also addresses the concern of misusing Section 232 and harming jobs and the economy. The hope is that the administration will cooperate with others to prevent the public from paying the price.

"My hope is that the administration can work with these other countries to resolve these issues - let's not have tariffs going up on both sides of the border, because what happens is that everyone gets hurt, we have fewer jobs, lower wages, we have high prices for our families in Ohio and consumers - and my legislation will help the administration do that," said Sen. Portman.

The legislation will also require the Department of Defense to justify the national security basis for new tariffs under Section 232.
