Lima City Schools announced a new K9 program on Wednesday, in an effort to bring more safety and security into the district.

Four school resource officers will be paired with a dog and will take them to work every day. One officer says he will even take his dog to football practices and games.

The dogs are not only at the school for safety, they will also bring a sense of community.

"People are going to know these dogs, they're going to love these dogs and we want them to feel like they are ours and so we think the opportunity with the businesses is going to be really exciting and everyone is going to feel like they are part of this. That's what we're really excited about," says Nate Garlock.

Scott Jones, School Resource Officer at Lima Senior is most excited for the positivity that the program will bring to the students.

"I think its just another way for us to build a bridge to the students and give them another avenue if they're having a bad day, they can just come and hang out with the dog for a little bit and just cheer them up. It's just one more way that we can interact," says Jones.

A six-week training course will start on the 13th for the officers and their pups.

If you would like a say in naming the dogs before they start training, the district is taking suggestions on their Facebook page. They will be taking suggestions until Thursday afternoon and will then have a Facebook poll open until Friday.
