A Lima pastor doesn't hesitate to enter a burning building when a life is at stake.

Wednesday, Pastor Robert Toney was awarded a "Citizens Medal of Valor" by the Lima Fire Department for his actions on the night of June 2nd. Toney lives across the street from 1232 Hazel Avenue and saw the house go up in flames. He knew his neighbor was inside and wasted no time getting her out.

"Just something came over me. I saw the fire and I knew they was in the house. I just couldn't help for not going there because we've been neighbors since I been living there, and I just thought that it was necessary for me to go over there when nobody else was around but me at the time and I ran over there yelling the house is on fire and I got them out," explained Toney.

"Sometimes you find yourself in a situation where there's nobody else there and you understand without swift action there will be severe consequences for people in that structure. We do not want people going back in, we've been trained hundreds of hours to do that job but sometimes there's nothing else you can do but to react," said Andy Heffner, Deputy Chief.

Toney is the pastor at the 11th Street Baptist Church.
