For the second year in a row, Lima City Schools have decided to hold a Back to School Celebration, getting everyone excited and ready for the upcoming school year. While the school district hosted the event, they didn't do it alone, several community partners helped put everything together.

"The community has always been very good to us, very supportive, so we gather all our community partners together - there are tons of them, and churches and they've collected the supplies for us," said Jill Ackerman, superintendent of Lima City Schools.

With games, face painting, a meal, as well as an opportunity to speak with school officials and School Resource Officers, there were plenty of things to do - but one of the biggest parts of the event was the school supplies giveaway, something that could be a big impact on some of the families that attended the event.

"It can be very costly, especially when you have multiple children in your family - you can spend hundreds of dollars just trying to get them equipped with what they need for school, so we’re able to do that for them," Ackerman said. "Our sponsors have given us cash donations as well as school supply donations, we're able to make those purchases for them and just give them what they need and hope that they have a wonderful back to school."

One community partner that joined in for the event was the Lima Salvation Army, who says that being a part of the celebration has been a treat.

"It’s a great way to collaborate, and they’ve got the kids, so it’s just a perfect combination of people good at working together to help a lot of people," said Paul Downing, operations coordinator for the Lima Salvation Army. "This is a really nice way to just give back to the community and make sure kids start off the right way."

New this year was a food collection, to give back to the district's three food pantries, and also to encourage people to give back to the community at large.
