Starting the school year off right was the goal for the University of Northwestern Ohio with their Welcome Week event Monday afternoon.

Monday was just the first day of this year's Welcome Week. The university teamed up with Barry Electronics to hold a video game tournament in the Racers Station building. Organizers with the school say that welcome week is vital for those students who may not know anyone on campus when they first arrive at the beginning of the semester.

"This is the first time that they’ve met their roommates, this is the first time that they’ve met their classmates, so it can be really daunting to come to a new place, especially when starting a new chapter in your life, and then also having to make new friends and find new places to eat, new places to hang out," said Shaunna Basinger, Student Activities Coordinator for UNOH. "Doing this really helps them get rid of a lot of that 'figuring out'."

The Welcome Week activities continued Monday night with a cornhole tournament and an outdoor movie.
