The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District latest project will improve the area surrounding the Miami Erie Canal near Spencerville.

The park district started construction on a half a million dollar towpath renovation. They will be excavating a 10 ft wide limestone trail along the canal. The hope is the trail will be able to connect Spencerville to Delphos with this first phase laying down the pathway for the first three and a half miles from Spencerville. A phase two is expected later on with this project having state and national significance.

"The North Country National Scenic Trail is a big one," said Tyler Black, deputy director of the park district. "Along with the Buckeye Trail. Having people walk, hike, bike eventually we'll have some cutouts for hopefully some overnight camping and that kind of thing."

Black added the project could push communities north of Delphos to continue to extend the path.
