In honor of National Suicide Prevention Month, Rhodes State College has put on a display of the impact of suicide on college campuses.

"Send Suicide Packing" is the message Rhodes State has displayed. 600 backpacks have been placed around campus and that only represents a little over half the number of suicide deaths on college campuses from 2017, according to the World Health Organization. They estimate 800,000 people died from suicide last year. Each backpack has a story of a student who died from suicide on a college campus. Rhodes State has a mental health resource list available to students.

"We also have several organizations locally who are willing to help," said Nicole Buccalo, coordinator for student engagement/activities at Rhodes State. "We also have quotes that are all throughout the campus that offer hope to our students. In addition to that, we also advertise the national hope line. We encourage students to text, to call, to come to any of the folks that are on campus who are willing to help or connect them to those resources."

You can call the National Suicide Lifeline at (800) 273-8255 or text HOME to 741741.
