Cooper Tire invited Hancock County eighth graders to get a look at what a career in manufacturing has to offer.

The company held their fourth Manufacturing Days, taking around 1,000 students through a variety of interactive stations designed to give them an idea of what facet of manufacturing would work best for them. It is an especially unique opportunity because many of the students may not have had the chance to explore the possibility of a career in manufacturing.

"What we want to show them is manufacturing has lots of good jobs available now, particularly in skilled trades," said Matthew Schroeder, a Tire and Vehicle Dynamics Engineer and member of the Dream Team, a group of Cooper Tire employees relatively early in their career who also work with students. "Lots of jobs through the US stay unfilled because they're not finding the right skill set to fill these needs so we want to push and encourage kids to consider manufacturing as a career."

For many of the students, a career in manufacturing was one they had not given much thought to, but after spending time seeing the variety in what they could do it definitely peaked some interest.

"I didn't know a whole lot and I didn't really think about it," said Arlington Local Schools student Gaben Helms, 14. "Definitely looking at it, it's a lot of cool stuff to see and even looking into it more after high school 'cause it's probably less expensive than going to college but you can still get a good job out of it and it can last you a long time."

The final Manufacturing Day at Cooper Tire will wrap up Friday, October 5, 2018.
