The red carpet is coming to Wapakoneta to celebrate one of its hometown heroes.

This Thursday, Willipie Street in front of the historic Wapa Theater will be closed as a large tent will be set up for the Auglaize County premiere of "First Man". The movie highlights Wapakoneta native Neil Armstrong and his part in the historic mission to the moon. More than 200 people will be attending the black-tie affair that is raising money for Wapakoneta's 50th-anniversary celebration of Armstrong's first steps on the moon in 2019. Thursday's premiere event is sure to be a night to remember.

"This has really been a great response, wonderful. Everyone is excited, everyone is ready to glam it up, wear their finery, and come and celebrate with us," said Judie Presar, 2019 Committee, Gala Coordinator.

Thursday night will also be the official kickoff for the 2019 committee and the schedule of events leading up to the July 20th anniversary. Eyes from around the world will be on Wapak and its native son as the date approaches and the committee is continuing to work on unique and interesting events to celebrate.

"People will be coming here, coming to the museum, coming to his hometown, seeing his birthplace, seeing his boyhood home, and then hopefully participating in all the things that we have planned. There are probably three dozen bus tours already that we know of that are coming into the community in that time period in 2019."

You can find more about the events leading up to the anniversary celebration, of July 13th through the 21st of 2019, by searching "First on the Moon" on Facebook. Thursday night's gala is sold out, but tickets to see the movie are still available at the box office.
