Lima City Council looked further into starting an I.T. Department and creating a position of Chief Technology Officer on Monday night.

That position would be filled by appointment by the mayor, although some council members requested the position be appointed by someone else. The Human Resource Committee on September 17th did not vote to recommend the creation of the Department to the full council. That discussion centered on whether the Mayor should appoint the head of the Department or it should be a Civil Service position.

"Over the past couple of years we have engaged in a program called Smart Cities," said Lima Council President John Nixon. "All of our I.T. has been handled by a Department within the Utilities Department, he's asking for a department head level person to coordinate this across all departments. Right now, the big question is whether to have it as a mayoral appointee or as a civil service job, there are pros and cons to both sides."

Council will talk again about this proposed Department and position on Monday, October 15th at 7 pm. Council also voted to move forward next year with the Melrose Storm Sewer Improvement Project, Phase One. There will be two additional phases to the project, but phase one will cost an estimated $575,000.
