Summer season is the reason behind more stink bugs

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The University of Illinois' Entomology department said it has noticed more stink bugs in central Illinois.

It tributes the increase to the previous summer, which they believe was hotter than usual. The department said stink bugs prefer summer weather. Assistant research professor Dr. Nick Seiter said stink bugs are looking for places to spend the winter. Homes are the ideal locations.

Dr. Seiter said there are two types of stink bugs: the brown stink bug, an Illinois native insect, and the brown marmorated stink bug, a relatively new invasive species expanding in central Illinois.

For farmers, the entomology department said it has not seen a widespread issue of them. However, it could present itself as an issue for homeowners. Dr. Seiter said the best thing one can do really is make sure the house is well sealed.

"[Make sure] the caulking is secure, that you don't have gaps particularly in the windows and at the doors that would allow them in," Dr. Seiter said.

As the years go by, it is expected these two type of stink bugs will be a common thing in Central Illinois.
