The Lima Salvation Army is helping local families get a head start on the holiday season.

The Salvation Army held their first day of the annual coat drive on Wednesday, as well as taking in applications for their Christmas Assistance Program. Both of these services require a proof of household members, such as social security cards and birth certificates, as well as proof of income and expenses. Those with the Salvation Army say that it's better to apply for the Christmas Assistance Program by Friday at 6 p.m., as there is a lot that goes into getting that program ready every year.

"There's work that takes place in getting those tags out to the community and getting Christmas bought and all bagged up and ready to go back out to the families that we serve," said Major Debbie Stacy. "We're looking to service between 700 - 900 families this year, and we’re hoping the bulk of them will get in within the three days."
