As a part of National Fire Prevention Week, the Lima Fire Department invited the community out to see how they teach children about fire safety.

The department held an open house at the Lima Noon Optimists' Safety City Survive Alive House. The house is designed to simulate different types of severe weather and fire conditions so that they can teach kids how to safely exit their own homes in a way that they will easily remember.

"This house is programmed to simulate severe weather as far as storms and tornadoes as well as it does allow the house to smoke up and allows the smoke detectors to go into alarm for the kids," says LFD Chief Bruce Black. "We teach the kids how to safely exit the structure. It's also somewhat entertaining so that the kids have a good time while they're here."

At the open house, they also honored Barry Electronics for their work in making the house as interactive as possible for the kids.
