Ohio State Lima is partnering with community organizations to bring new life to a used part of the city.

The school plans to construct an urban garden and community space in a vacant lot on South Jackson St. It is part of a project to make unused land in the city more productive. The idea of a community space and garden was an appealing one to stakeholders to help alleviate food insecurity in the area and put a focus on health and wellness.

"This all started with the students coming up and trying to map out all of the vacant lots that the city of Lima has with the idea of creating a use for some of the vacant lots,' said Assoc. Dean Fábio P. Leite. "This is what the community decided to do with the South Jackson Community Gardens, and it's not only the garden but also related activities to maintain wellness in the community as a whole."

LACNIP and the Lima SPROUTS will maintain the garden, but OSU Lima plans on keeping their students involved in the project to allow them to implement in-class ideas in the real world.

"We belong to the community and so we wanted to make sure that we're a part of it in giving back in that way and also for our students it's particularly important not only because they are engaged and involved in the project but because they are also putting things that they have learned into practice and applying that knowledge right away," said Leite.

A variety of community organizations including Activate Allen County, the West Ohio Food Bank, and Allen Soil and Water District plan to hold educational programming in the space. The garden is expected to be done sometime in the spring of 2019.
