A Lima church is honoring our local service men and women ahead of Veterans Day.

Cable Road Alliance Church held a dinner for veterans in our area to thank them for their service. Attendees were treated to live music and a speech by Purple Heart recipient Retired Sergeant Major Doug Reed, of Jackson, and his wife Jana Reed. The couple spoke about Doug's time in Afghanistan when he got his jaw blown off by a rocket-propelled grenade, and how they got through it with each other.

"In the overall scheme of things, it wasn't fun," said Reed, of his injury. "I don't really remember it because it was such a hard hit to my head, but if I lost a jaw in the deal then there's still seven guys with their families that are still here."

Jana spoke about going through the ordeal as a family member, a perspective she says is often overlooked.

"So many times we hear the survivor's stories, whether it be cancer, whether it be injury, but behind that story is also a family member who has to typically fight because Doug was 55 days in amnesia state," said Jana. "He did not know what he was doing. I had to be there to speak on his behalf."

The couple also spoke about how their faith helped get them through the trying times.
