New volunteer tutors for the Northwest Ohio Literacy Council received training Wednesday afternoon to start helping adults in the area.

The training session taught the new tutors what they'll need to know and do to start working with an adult for two hours a week. The Northwest Ohio Literacy Council provides free adult tutoring in math and reading on a one-on-one basis, and according to executive director Ken Blanchard, there is a need for volunteers to help out the community.

"Within our community, we have about 13,000 adults that are functionally illiterate that read at about a third grade level or below, so we're trying to reach those folks in the community and get them in here, get them to set some goals, set some parameters for themselves to help themselves and their families," Blanchard said.

Training for volunteers is held four times a year.
