In honor of Veterans Day, Heritage Elementary School students put on a program for veterans.

Kindergartners through fourth-graders participated in the program. They sang songs and played instruments to honor those who served. Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin was the special guest speaker. Chief Martin served in the United States Marine Corps and wanted to share with the students what it's like to serve their country.

"I think it's important for kids to understand freedom is not free. That's become unfortunately a little too cliche, but we have incredibly brave women and men all around the world, even as we're speaking, that are putting their lives on the line to make sure our freedoms are maintained to make sure that we can sleep well at night without having to fear attack from another nation," says Chief Martin.

The program ended with a slideshow honoring veterans related to the students and staff of the school. The program has become a yearly tradition at Heritage.

Correction: We incorrectly stated that Chief Kevin Martin was in the United States Navy. Chief Martin served in the United States Marine Corps.
