Hancock County is taking steps to remedy the overcrowding problem at the county jail.

As one .25% sales tax rolls out, the Hancock County Commissioners are rolling a new one in to raise funds that will be used to solve their overcrowding issue at the Hancock County Jail. Right now, they are talking with the state and the National Institute of Corrections to figure out if it would be best to add on to their current facility or to build a totally new one.

The jail has been dealing with overcrowding issues for some years now, which has caused the jail to use other more costly ways to manage the intake.

"We're outsourcing our prisoner housing which is tying up deputies in terms of transportation plus tying up costs outside of Hancock County," said Hancock County Commissioner Brian Robertson. "It also puts, on the criminal justice side, our courts and our law enforcement in a situation where we're not able to handle the amount of people that maybe need held or incarcerated."

Robertson says the initial assessment will most likely be finished sometime next year, but any construction or finished project is still a couple of years in the future.
