As it's still technically fall, many people may not have put away the garden hose. Even though it may have a self-draining spout, an attached hose can cause it to freeze and break because it can't drain properly. They say to also check your basement to make sure no windows are open that would allow frigid air in, causing temperatures to drop. But if a line does freeze and burst, it's important to label your main water line turn-off valve.

"Mark it, put a tag on it named shut off valve and show everybody in the house where it's at in case if mom and dad ain't home and the kids are there and all of a sudden something breaks they can shut that off and really that can help alleviate damages in case you do have a problem," said Mike Caprella, Lima Utilities Department.

Caprella says if you do have a break and can't get the water to shut off, to call the Lima Utilities Department and they will come out and shut it off at the street.
