The Lake Improvement Association (LIA) held their first meeting since their trip to Columbus to voice their opposition on some proposed changes that could effect Grand Lake St. Marys.

The LIA traveled to Columbus on November 20, 2018, to speak out against a proposed rule that would lift the winter manure spreading ban. The association says research on the lake has shown the ban was good for the health of Grand Lake, and they believe that the proposed wording is vague and unenforceable.

After attending the Ohio Department of Agriculture's public hearing on the matter the LIA felt optimistic about the situation.

"We came out really, really encouraged because there wasn't one single advocacy group or individual that stood up and testified in favor of the proposed changes so I think the Ohio Department of Agriculture was sent a very clear message," said LIA President Nick Rentz.

Rentz says the next step in the process is to go to the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review (JCARR) meeting to speak their minds there.

"It's a little bit different, it's kind of more of a judicial review there," said Rentz. "We'll definitely be heading down there to testify. If they invalidate the rule then we're back to where we are now. It's important to know too that we're willing to compromise on these rules, however, the way this came down left us no room for even any input."

The JCARR meeting will take place in the statehouse in Columbus on December 10, 2018, at 1:30 pm.
