The holidays can be very stressful because of social events like family gatherings and work holiday parties.

In order to have a low-stress holiday, you want to find ways to avoid stress, but be polite at the same time. Whether it's a holiday party or getting together with the family, you could be put in uncomfortable situations. Many people struggle at making small talk and dodging those dreadful conversations. Now how do we avoid those uncomfortable conversations, especially when it comes to politics?

Ohio Northern University Associate Professor of Communication Studies & Department Chair, Jennifer Walton says, "One thing you can do is just try to stay as innocuous as possible with any kind of conversation you start and if somebody does bring up politics, try to segue back out. Talk about the food. Talk about your job. Ask people about so what are you doing at work. Try to keep things a little bit lighter. It's best to just try to avoid it and if you can't avoid it. Steer your way out of it. I've even gone so far as to say this conversation is making me unhappy. Can we move on to something a little bit more interesting?"

With smartphones being such a common thing, what's the proper etiquette for using your phone at a party?

"Don't use it as your social crutch," says Walton. "So many people use their phone to avoid awkward conversations so instead of having this awkward encounter, I'll pretend I'm working on my phone. I'll check email. I'll play Candy Crush, Words with Friends, whatever it might be. And people use that tool to avoid socializing so that is definitely rude and something that needs to be avoided."

Walton says taking pictures are fine, but wait until later to post it.
