Mercy Health-St. Rita's announced a partnership to further cancer treatment in the area.

An affiliation announced this morning with Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Physicians and patients at Mercy Health-St. Rita's will now receive even more state-of-the-art cancer treatment and access to the expertise and sub-specialization of over 200 oncologists. Bob Baxter of Mercy Health said joining The James Cancer Network allows patients to receive care close to home near their loved ones.

"Cancer is an evolving area of care and practice," Baxter said, president and CEO of Mercy Health Lima and Toledo regions. "So it's complex to begin with then it continues to evolve as we talk about genetics, new technologies, and new treatment options. Being able to bring the best possible, available resources to our patients and to the community I think will be the concrete real impact people will see."

St. Rita's cancer center will gain access to telegenetics, tele-survivorship care plans and rare clinical trials.

"The relationship between 'The James' and St. Rita's means that we can really enhance virtual health, allowing remote access to the physicians at 'The James' for consultation for expert care," said Dr. David Cohn, chief medical officer of the OSUCCC. "It also means we can provide genetic counseling remotely for patients that are at risk of cancer."

Operational details have begun to be worked out and the transition is expected to be smooth.
