LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The month of December has arrived, and the Christmas Voucher Program with the Allen County Veterans Service Commission is now underway.

The $50 vouchers are available for eligible Allen County veterans to help with the cost of food during the holiday season. Veterans who received a Thanksgiving voucher in November or in previous years will be contacted by phone to set up this month’s voucher. The program comes at a critical time, as many veterans are experiencing financial strain during the holidays.

"We have a lot of veterans that come in that wouldn't normally come in for any assistance or anything, but because times are so tough and it's the holiday time, it's helping ease their pockets. It's helping ease their grocery bills, so people are very grateful for these vouchers," says Tamara Wilson, Executive Director, Allen County Veterans Service Commission.

The Christmas voucher distribution will continue through Dec. 19 at the Allen County Veterans Service Commission, 301 North Main St., Lima. Distribution hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

New applicants must bring a copy of their DD-214 showing honorable discharge and at least 90 days of active-duty service. Proof of household income for the past 30 days and current utility bill are also required. Applicants must have been residents of Allen County for at least 90 days to be eligible.
