LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A retired U.S. Navy chief petty officer from Canton spoke to the Lima Kiwanis Club about his journey leading up to and during his service in the Navy.
Retired Chief Petty Officer Robert Murphy served 20 years as a submariner. He began his career as a sonar technician on the surface fleet before transitioning to a fire control technician on a submarine, where he was responsible for firing Tomahawk missiles and torpedoes and creating firing solutions. As Murphy spoke to Kiwanis members, he shared a message he hopes they will take home this Veterans Day.
"All these veterans out there and the people serving currently, away from their families and everything like that- we do this thankless job, but we also leave families behind while we do these jobs so just to be appreciative, not only of the veteran but of the spouses and the kids that we actually have to leave behind to do our job," says Robert Murphy, Retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer.
The Kiwanis Club also recognized its own members who have served in the military.
