Putnam County has quite a few improvement projects planned for the new year.

The county hopes to replace the clay tiles on the roof of the courthouse with possibly a tin roof. They will also put a handicap ramp in on the hickory street courthouse entrance and then close down the second entrance in order to tighten up security. The fairgrounds will also be getting attention this year with some pipes getting replaced after this year's fair.

"You have to drain them in the winter and they blow out some leaks and when you're having a fair going on, we don't really have shut off valves properly in place," said Putnam County Commissioner Vince Schroeder. "That'll be done yet this summer after the fair but before it's time to plant grass.

The county hopes to replace the clay tiles on the roof of the courthouse with possibly a steel roof. They will also put a handicap ramp in on the hickory street courthouse entrance and then close down the second entrance in order to tighten up security.

"It's also worthwhile to try to reduce expenses in our office," said Schroeder. "We ask other offices to do it a lot. We make that effort also. Our maintenance crew was four people, one of them retired, and now it's down to three. We're trying to do without that extra maintenance person. We want the quality of service and everything working, but [we'll] make that effort and see how it works."

Should the commissioners find that they do need the extra help, they have agreed to keep the option of bringing back the position on the table.
