Cherry's Propane Service made a special donation Wednesday morning to help out Lima area cancer patients. A representative from Cherry's paid a visit to St. Rita's Cancer Center to present a check for $2,600. The money will go to the Cancer Center's Little Miracle Fund, which helps cancer patients with expenses like travel costs.

Mercy Health - St. Rita’s Medical Center Volunteer/Auxiliary Resources president, Joyce Gerdeman, presented a check for $240,000 to Ronda Lehman, president of St. Rita’s, during St. Rita’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon recently. This donation was made on behalf of all St. Rita’s volunteers which includes 438 adults, 82 college students, 132 summer teen volunteers, 125 shadowing students and 209 supporting members. 275 volunteers were in attendance at the event.

Mercy Health St. Rita’s announced plans to build a 48,000 square-foot educational center on the corner of Market and Collett Streets. The building, which features classrooms, labs, and a 250-seat lecture hall, will house their Graduate Medical Education program as well as provide training space for their medical staff and the first responders who work with the hospital to help facilitate team-based care at the hospital.

Representatives with Mercy Health St. Rita's paid a visit to Elida High School to help students understand the problems surrounding drug and opioid abuse. Those visiting from St. Rita's spelled out some of the terminology surrounding drugs for the health classes at Elida, as well as informing them about some of the dangers that can come from misusing prescriptions or using illegal drugs.

Learning has never been so lifelike and Mercy Health St. Rita's is working to make sure they have the equipment needed to educate their future medical teams. The high fidelity simulators are so lifelike it's almost like treating a human patient. By using the simulators in medical education patient care and safety will increase as health care providers can focus on their critical care skills in a controlled environment. Medical professionals can actually "treat" these simulators with actual procedures like inserting a chest tube.

Mercy Health St. Rita's celebrated the grand opening of the newest location for their thrift shop. The "Mercy Health Thrift Shop" opened its doors on North Street back in January. But representatives from St. Rita's, the Allen County Chamber of Commerce, and volunteers were at the shop to officially open and bless the new location. Over the years, the thrift shop has moved from place to place with the mission of providing help for people that need it in the community.

Mercy Health - St. Rita's has been working to take a more comprehensive approach to treating heart disease, and at their annual Cardiovascular Symposium they filled their staff in on just that. One of the hospital's cardiologists spoke specifically about how they are treating patients with failing heart valves. The hospital has been able to replace the main heart valve by way of a catheter, a less invasive procedure compared to open heart surgery. 

While many people listen to music for recreation, it can also be used for therapeutic purposes. Wednesday, the Lima Symphony Orchestra continued their healing through music program at Mercy Health St. Rita's. "Healing Through Music" is a program intended to actively fight drug addiction and help those with mental illness.
