Treatment Trains to Improve Water Quality at Grand Lake St. Marys

Officials are ahead of schedule on treatment trains to improve the water quality of Grand Lake St. Marys. The Lake Improvement Association is close to completing the Coldwater treatment train, 1 of 7 major tributaries on their list over the next few years. The projects are funded through a grant from the Clean Ohio Program. They help eliminate the excess of phosphorous nutrients causing algal blooms in the lake.

Coldwater is one of their 2 major natural water treatment plants, and with one done, they're working on design installation for the Chickasaw Creek treatment train. "We pump the raw water that's nutrient rich through those vegetative cleansing units, and then back into the lake, and as some engineers say, the secret to pollution is dillution," said the lake's restoration manager, Milt Miller, "So, it's incremental victories, if you will, having one on each tributary collectively will be impactful." They will begin work on the Chickasaw treatment train once they choose and purchase the property.
