Ottawa Elementary kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month

Guests from the community, including parents and staff, visited classrooms to help lead a variety of activities.

Ottawa Elementary has made this an annual tradition to bring families into the school to share and celebrate their heritage.

“We hope that our students get to see different cultures. They experienced dance from Toledo earlier today — it was El Corazón de México, and they performed traditional Hispanic dances for our students. And right now, students across the school are involved in different activities, like la lotería in third grade, which is like bingo,” said Kristin Barnhart, multilingual coordinator at Ottawa Elementary.

Staff say the goal is to educate students about Hispanic culture and help everyone feel included and celebrated in the community.
