LIMA, OH (WLIO) - While it has nearly been eradicated, the fight to eliminate polio continues and the Lima Rotary Club is part of the fight.
Lima Rotarians heard about the global polio eradication initiative that Rotary International has been a part of for more than three decades at Monday's meeting. World polio cases have been reduced by 99.9% during that time. There have been some outbreaks in recent years as vaccination procedures have been interrupted by world events.
"In 2021 there was actually an outbreak, a small one, in the Ukraine because of the war and the disruption of medical supplies. The disruption of medical services and the vaccine schedules were disrupted but they were able to get that stopped. As long as one child has polio we're at risk because of travel. Everyone travels everywhere anymore," stated Dr. Susan Hubbell, Lima Rotarian.
Lima Rotarians donate to PolioPlus to help in the fight to eradicate polio. More than 2 billion dollars has been raised worldwide by Rotarians.
