LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Activate Allen County is encouraging residents to start thinking about spring by taking part in community gardening opportunities in Lima.
The organization is now accepting registrations for raised garden plots at the South Jackson Street Community Garden. There is no cost to reserve a raised bed, allowing residents to grow fruits, vegetables and other plants during the upcoming growing season.
Activate Allen County officials say they are also planning additional activities at the South Jackson Street site this year, expanding opportunities for community involvement and education.
“What’s really cool is that we also have some new additions to the South Jackson community gardens,” said Chad Welker with Activate Allen County. “We have a pavilion and restrooms, which we’re actually going to be doing an education series this year during the summer with that. So if you want to be a part and you want to start a community garden, we do have beds open, so please come and go to the website to apply.”
Organizers say community gardening offers a number of benefits, including promoting healthier lifestyles, increasing access to fresh food and encouraging environmental stewardship.
