LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – A Lima woman who has been making a difference in children’s lives since 2016 was recognized Thursday for her dedication to kinship care.

Tywona Bevis is currently a kinship caregiver to three children — one who is her cousin and two siblings who were her neighbors. The Allen County commissioners honored Bevis with a proclamation commending her efforts and recognizing September as National Kinship Month. Allen County Children Services works to place children with family members or friends before turning to foster care when possible. Bevis said caring for the children has been a rewarding experience.

“I love what I do. I've had children come in who needed placed, who were in loopholes between homes,” Bevis said. “So what I do is just bring them in, help them from where they're at, get them strong, send them on their way with their families, or they stay with me.”

Bevis said she was honored to be recognized and that the timing was meaningful, as she had been questioning whether she was making a difference. Allen County Children Services assured her that she is indeed making an impact on the lives of the children in her care.
