LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Helping the environment can start right at home, and that was the focus of this week's Allen County Master Gardeners Brown Bag Series.

The program combined a book club discussion with a nature presentation centered on the book "How Can I Help? Saving Nature With My Yard" by Douglas Tallamy.

Participants learned that transforming their yards is one of the most direct ways to protect the environment. Suggestions included reducing the size of traditional lawns, converting portions of turf into garden beds to create vital habitats and using rain barrels to conserve water for gardening.

Organizers also encouraged residents to make environmentally friendly choices that support local ecosystems.

"How we can help is by watching out for invasive plants, plant pollinators, don't use chemical sprays, and plant a lot of natives and just enjoy, enjoy, and share," said Sandy Kennedy of the Allen County Master Gardeners.

The Brown Bag Series will continue on June 30 at 12:15 p.m. with a program focused on butterflies. The event will be held in the gazebo at the Children's Garden.
