LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Area residents were encouraged to take steps to raise awareness for fall prevention.

To kick off Fall Prevention Awareness Week, the Area Agency on Aging 3 hosted an event at Ottawa Metro Park to promote the importance of walking in people’s prevention efforts. Ohio has set a goal of 10 million steps to help raise fall prevention awareness. To help reach that goal, adoptable four-legged supporters from Happy Tails Pup Partners were on hand to walk with participants and help them get their steps in.

“Lot of people think, as they age, that falling is just a natural part of aging, and it doesn't have to be. So, this kind of shows the solidarity and brings about the importance of exercise and fall prevention, as well as just keeping active. Socialization is important to keep from fall prevention and just making that community awareness, so everyone can be a part of it,” said Kathy Hounshell, health education coordinator at the Area Agency on Aging 3.

The agency will hold a Fall Prevention Awareness Day on Thursday, Sept. 25th.
