LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — As grocery prices continue to climb, area seniors have a new opportunity to offset the cost of fresh produce through a seasonal nutrition program.

Applications opened this week for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, offered locally through the Area Agency on Aging 3. The program provides eligible adults age 60 and older with benefits to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets across a seven-county region. The program has grown in popularity among seniors looking for affordable, healthy food options during the warmer months.

Area seniors can apply for fresh produce benefits amid rising grocery costs

“For those that are approved, you will receive a list of, you know where you can redeem those benefits at, within our seven counties, so you know where you're going, which is important. And then again, you get $50 worth, and you can utilize those up through the fall,” said Dre White, vice president of community living services.

Officials say seniors who participated previously must reapply each year. If approved, the $50 benefit will be loaded onto an existing program card for use at authorized locations.

With limited funding available, organizers encourage seniors to apply as soon as possible. Applications can be completed online or by calling (419) 222-7723 for assistance.
