BLUFFTON, Ohio (WLIO) — Bluffton University students are being challenged to weed out fact from fiction when using artificial intelligence.

During the student opening convocation, the dean of students discussed this year's civic engagement theme, “Truth and Integrity in the Age of A.I.”

The talk focused on values of integrity, including trust, responsibility, fairness and respect, and how students can use those values when evaluating information generated by AI.

Bluffton University students challenged to find “Truth and Integrity in the Age of A.I.”

“Am I evaluating what I'm getting as something that is true? And does it make sense, right? I mean, AI is generating lots of really cool information from a wide variety of sources, but you can't always tell where that information is coming from. If there's a bias in the database that it's collecting from, then you're going to get a bias in its response. And so, our hope is our students are starting to be able to evaluate and recognize when they can see those inaccuracies, when they can see those biases and to be able to make really good informed decisions about the kind of information that they're receiving,” said Dr. Mark Bourassa, Bluffton University dean of students.

The convocation marks the start of the 127th class at Bluffton University.
