LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Campers improving their water skills as part of the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District's Kayak Adventures summer day camp.

Children ages 10 - 14 took to the waters of Lima Lake to beat the heat, while learning how to kayak. The program, supported by the ODNR Boating Safety Education Grant, gives the park district an opportunity to focus more on safety when it comes to teaching kids important life skills.

"We focus heavily on safety; for this program, we learn about how to properly be fitted in a life jacket and what makes a life jacket safe," said Marie Walton, a naturalist with JAMPD. "We also learn the basic strokes of forward and reverse and how to do a turn sweep. Then, we also do some rescues on the water, so they get to take turns being rescued and being the rescuer, and it helps them become more fearless on the water."
