LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — As Sexual Assault Awareness Month is observed across the country, Crime Victim Services is working to educate the community about the lasting effects of sexual violence and the importance of supporting survivors.

Advocates say trauma from sexual assault can impact the brain, sometimes causing survivors to behave differently than they did before the incident. Because of this, they stress the importance of understanding and compassion when someone comes forward.

“It is important to believe survivors. That is one of the top things that can help on their journey of healing after something has occurred,” said Becca Peckinpaugh, Day One director at Crime Victim Services. “It can’t promise it will fix everything, but it definitely helps when there are people around to support survivors and help them through what they’re going through.”

The organization encourages anyone who has experienced sexual assault or knows someone who has to reach out for help through its Day One program.

As part of its outreach efforts, Crime Victim Services is inviting the public to attend its annual Pound and Paint event, scheduled for Friday, April 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bradfield Community Center.
