DELPHOS, OH (WLIO) — The Delphian Social Club hosted its ninth annual Downtown Bash basketball tournament to promote physical activity, sportsmanship and fun.
The second day of the 3-on-3 basketball tournament featured teams of kids from kindergarten through 12th grade. Families from across the area participated in the tournament or support their children and friends. Club members said the event helps promote the fundamentals of physical activity and sportsmanship.
“The whole purpose of the social club is to get people out and engaged. Targeting the youth programs is definitely a draw to get the parents or grandparents out," said Brandon Osting, Delphian Social Club member. "You'll see that a thousand people that are out here supporting youth sports and that kids are engaged. There are kids from multiple schools here that team up together. It's just an overall great program that that is vital for our community's success.”
Osting said proceeds from the tournament are put toward the community each year. This year's funds will support the Delphos Jefferson and St. John's girls soccer teams. Participants said the tournament also helped them stay active over the summer.
“It's fun and makes them happy. It helps them get better now and lets them work to get better when they're like older," said Rylee Sherman, 8th grader at Delphos St. Johns.
“Just to be active, not stop moving," said Reese Boberg, 8th grader at Delphos St. Johns, when asked why she plays sports. "I play in a city soccer league. It's not in Delphos St. John's, but I play soccer, basketball, track and cheer."
Tournament officials said 68 teams participated in the adult tournament Friday. They said the tournament has continued to grow because of feedback from the community.
